Spontaneous Wild Life Encounters

In our adventures outdoors, we have been fortunate to have spontaneously chanced upon various wild life in their natural habitats going through their natural routines and activities uninterrupted by humans. Such encounters have been definite highlights of our immersion in nature while respecting wild life in their natural habitats; giving them unhindered space to do what they normally do.

What have you been fortunate enough to have captured on camera

Courtship Dance by
Superb Lyre Bird

Morton National Park, NSW

The Superb Lyre Bird has a versatile range of vocals, being able to mimic the calls of other birds, but are very elusive and not easy to spot.

I was very fortunate to chance upon this male doing a courtship dance right in the open on my drive from Fitzroy Falls to Belmore Falls at Morton National Park, clearly trying to impress it's female companion.

Killer Whales celebrating
Hunt of Minke Whale

Monterey Bay, CA

We had the very good fortune of witnessing first hand a large group of killer whales hunting down a Minke Whale just off the Monterey Peninsula in April 2024.

The hunting tactic was to tire out the Minke Whale by not allowing it to surface to breathe, thus effectively drowning it. The female Killer Whale leading the hunt was also seen to be coaching one of its young whales in the hunt.

It was amazing to witness the entire 30-minute hunt where the Killer Whales patiently chased down the smaller prey and keeping it under the surface. It may seem cruel for the prey but its nature taking it's cause, but humans on the boats were not allowed to interfere with the cause of nature.

Following the successful hunt, we were treated to a series of breachings and flips as the Killer Whales celebrated their successful hunt.

Mating Frogs in the snow

Bachalpsee, Switzerland

A very unexpected sight on our hike to Bachalpsee from Grindelwald First in early June 2024. Much of the trail was still frozen with unmeted snow and ice.

The lake was still frozen and covered in snow. We first noticed a couple of dead frogs in the snow, then we saw a couple of live ones. This pair caught having an afternoon delight made our day!

Kukaburras Mating

Ringwood Golf Course, VIC

Luck is often on your side when you are accustomed to keeping an eye out for wild life.

I was waiting to tee off on the 10th tee at the Ringwood Golf Course when I saw this pair of Kookaburras having a bit of fun. Thankfully I was quick to whip out my phone camera and captured the fleeting moment.

Magpie Larks
building Nest

Northcote, VIC

A routine walk along the Merri Creek in Northcote Victoria in the Spring of 2023 presented a lovely surprise when we spotted a couple of Magpie Larks building a nest. My daughter with her very keen eye for observing birds in their daily lives, captured these wonderful images and video footage.

If we keep our eyes peeled and ears opened, you never know what pleasant surprises nature serves up.

Miniature Snails

Cape Woolamai, VIC

I have walked the Cape Woolamai Loop in Phillip Island probably a dozen times in the last 5 years. That area is known to be the habitat for millions of migratory Short Tailed Shear Waters that fly thousands of kilometres from Alaska to nest and breed here every Spring through Summer.

On one particular hike here, we were surprised to find thousands of miniature snails. The adult ones are no bigger than your pinky nail. Their miniature size makes them even more fragile and precious.
