Davos - Klosters
Davos, Switzerland
I have been very fortunate to have skied at Davos twice - 2006 with my then 7 year old daughter, and 2007 with a German colleague.
This is a huge ski region, although somewhat fragmented into six ski areas - Parsenn, Madrisa, Jakobshorn, Prisha, Rinerhorn and Schatzalp. Ski trails in the region total more than 300 kilometres and cater to all abilities.
In 2006 we skied mainly in Parsenn, and 2007 Parsenn & Jakobshorn.
Most of the ski terrain is above 1,900 metres, hence snow reliability is relatively high with average annual snow fall of 10 metres.
The longest trails are more than 12 kilometres long and the biggest vertical drop more than 2,000 metres.
Wonderful ski experiences both times!
Trip Tips
-
Davos is quite easily accessible by car from Zurich Airport (about 2 hours) or by train.
-
Having a car will make it easier to get from one ski area to the other.
-
Davos being the venue of the annual World Economic Forum, you will find here many high quality accommodation and restaurants.
Ski Tips
-
As the terrain is vast, to get from one area to another, you need a good ability to read ski trail maps and find your way around in the mountains.
-
If you are not mindful, you may find yourself in a remote village and figure out how to get back by bus or train.
-
We chose Parsenn as our base both times as its the largest ski area in the region with lots of trails to choose from.
-
Jakobshorn is the best area for beginners and the lifts and terrain in this area is the easiest to follow in the region.
Zermatt
Valais, Switzerland
This was a ski trip taken quite many years ago as you could tell from the photos, but certainly worthy for inclusion on this site's repertoire.
Zermatt is a wonderful car-free ski village, and has been for many decades. Skiing in the shadows of the iconic Matterhorn, along with the amazing Apres Ski made it a very memorable trip.
Back then, ski holidays were much more relaxed without the throngs of crowds at ski lifts and crowded slopes. Snow boarding was not even a thing.
Trip Tips
-
Zermatt is a lovely car-free village. You catch a train or park at the edge of the village and get taken to your accommodation by electric carts.
-
The village is wonderfully walkable with a very wide offering of shops, restaurants and bars. This adds to the relaxed atmosphere without the noise and pollution of cars on the road.
Ski Tips
-
The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise gondola is the highest 3S cableway in the world, reaching a summit elevation of 3,883 meters (12,740 feet). This gondola connects Trockener Steg with the Klein Matterhorn, providing access to Europe's highest mountain station.
-
Skiing on this glacier, you feel you are so close to the Matterhorn you could almost reach out and touch it...
