Whistler Blackcomb

Whistler, BC

Spending Christmas at Whistler with an enthusiastic 8 year old in tow was a dream.

Just 2 hours' drive from Vancouver, Whistler Blackcomb has got to be my all time favourite ski destinations. With very good snow statistics, 2 awesome mountains linked at the top by the Peak-2-Peak gondola, looong continuous runs for all abilities, and amazing Apres Ski in a lovely holiday atmosphere, in my humble opinion its hard to beat.

Skiing with a young child, we appreciated that there were very good continuous green runs from up high at Roundhouse all the way down to the village. And for sure, plenty of blue and black runs that are easy to access with the gondola linking the two peaks.

Also, when you are carrying two sets of skis and a young child to watch out for, you would want to stay next to the gondola. You pay a bit more but given the convenience of being next to the gondola, it made for a much more relaxed and enjoyable ski week.

Trip Tips

  • You do not need a rental vehicle if you are just skiing at Whistler and not planning to drive further East eg. to Banff. There are many companies offering shuttles from Vancouver or directly from the airport. Its a relatively stress free 2-hour trip.

  • When in Canada, be sure to try their Beaver Tails - a fried dough pastry stretched to resemble the shpae of a beaver tail, and topped with cinnamon, chocolate or  nutella.

  • Another great feature offered by many restaurants (at least when we were there), is that you can order half portions off the main menu, so that young children are not confined to the few limited basic kiddie menu.

  • While in Vancouver, the Vancouver Aquarium is a great half day attraction where you can see Baluga Whales and playful beavers.

Ski Tips

  • The two-stage Whistler Village Gondola takes you up to Roundhouse where you have endless tracks for different abilities providing continuous long runs down to the village.

  • The two-stage Blackcomb gondola takes you to the top of Blackcomb.

  • You can easily switch mountains at the top with the Peak-2-Peak.

  • Can't say enough about the wonderful ski runs, endless choices of great cafes and restaurants of many different cuisines.

  • Do try their unique and delicious YAM FRIES and BEAVER TAILS!
