Sankt Anton am Arlberg
San Anton, Austria

In my teens I was a fan of espionage novels particularly with uncover agents moved around exotic parts of Europe involving in cloak and dagger activities. Somehow, a particular story with agents lurking around in Sankt Anton remained stuck in my head and a sub conscious goal developed to go ski in this globally very well regarded ski resort.

When the opportunity came up to go on a ski trip with my now adult daughter and her partner, it was a no brainer to make Sankt Anton am Arlberg our destination.

January 2023 found us in this renowned ski haven for a very memorable week of bluebird days (and 1 white out day!). Staying near the Nasserreinbahn gave us easy access to Gampen and Kapall (2,330m), and you could also ski down to the Galzig Gondola to get Galzig & Valluga (2,811m).

Trip Tips

  • Sankt Anton am Arlberg is an easy one hour drive from Innsbruck.

  • Besides a reputation for reliable quality snow, Sankt Anton am Arlberg never disappointed with Apres Ski. Again, staying near Nasserreinbahn is easy walking distance to the village centre.

  • If you have time, or heading West to Switzerland after skiing here, the drive through the Alps in this region in the Winter is truly awe inspiring! Even if you are not headed West, if you have a couple of hours to spare, a scenic drive is absolutely recommended!

Ski Tips

  • Sankt Anton am Arlberg has very good historical statistics for reliable fresh snowfall. In January 2023 when we were about to travel there, there was a week of high temperatures in the Alps and many resorts in Switzerland were reported to have been forced to close for a period of time. We messaged our airbnb host for snow conditions at Sankt Anton and she assured us "No worries - plenty of snow here and we are open!" Indeed she was right, when we arrive, there was snow on the streets in the village and plenty of fresh snow on the slopes!

  • Note: above relating our actual experience. Year to year snow falls vary and cannot be guaranteed

  • For Aussies - don't miss the Krazy Kanguruh Restaurant on Moooserweg. They even have a special Aussie menu on Australia Day!

Skiarena Steibis
Oberstaufen, Austria

This smallish ski area in the North-West of Austria, just across the border from Germany near Lake Contance was great for a weekend day trip with a German colleague from the Blackforest where I visited often for business conferences.

A very early rise on a Sunday morning for the 3-hour drive ensured that we had nearly a full day on the slopes.

Being in late March, we were at the tail end of the season, but we were fortunate to still have decent snow for a great day.

Thanks very much D.M. for doing the driving there and back.

There were only 4 chairs and 1 gondola, but it was good enough for a day on the slopes!
